Home/ Away not detecting Home via phone

CoreyPDX
Community Member

It used to be that my Nest thermostat-E would know I'm home because of my phone, but now it seems to go into away mode unless I walk in front of it.

I checked the options in the Nest app, and on the thermostat itself, and I don't see any wifi options for detecting home/ away.  Have they been removed?

I should add that I've checked that my phone is allowing Location for the Nest app always.

I may have found the answer after some more googling. It seems I need to use Google Home to set up the home/away detection. So I did that just now. We'll see if it works.

Hello CoreyPDX,

I'm sorry for the late reply. I know it has been a while, but I wanted to ensure that everything was covered here.

If you have other mobile devices that contribute to the Home and Away Assist, make sure to enable both location services settings in the Nest app and a primary phone was selected. Please let me know how it goes when enabling Home and Away from the Google Home app.

Thanks,

Mark

I'm still very confused by the behavior. Even when I'm home (and I'm not clear how to know when the app thinks I'm at home!) nest is setting the thermostat to eco mode (57 degrees currently) even when I'm standing right in front of it.

It's behavior baffles me, and I often feel like I'm fighting with it.  I raise the temperature, and an hour later it has set it to eco mode again.

I'm really starting to be annoyed with this system.

Having all these same issues and spending far too much time re-adjusting my thermostat to a temp I can live with (above 60F). I've tried everything and phone support isn't able to help.

Hi there,

I know it's been a while. I'm sorry for the delay. I just want to ask if  you are still encountering the issue. Please let us know to further assist you.

I appreciate your help, Mark and Juni.

Best,

Jenelyn

Yes, it's still a problem. I haven't been able to figure out why the system goes into eco mode when we're clearly home, even standing right in front of the thermostat.

So far Google's only response here has been "Sorry it's been so long. Is this still a problem?"  Not helpful so far. I'm starting to think these responses are automated.

Hey CoreyPDX,

Thanks for the update. I'm sorry for the trouble this has caused you. I'd love to help. Do you have any relatives who have access to your account? Also, could you please try to disable and enable Home/Away Assist on your actual thermostat? Check as well if you have any schedule automatically created, as it might affect the behavior of your thermostat.

Regards,

Jenelyn

I checked the schedule, and it had quite a few weird entries in it. I think I've cleaned it up, leaving only the necessary entries.

Auto scheduling is enabled in nest..  with the entries in the schedule, will it still try to learn more?
