Hot Water not working

Chris_H

Hi,

Nest thermostat used for 2+ years but recently we have had no hot water. We have a seperate hot water tank so it is not a combi boiler situation. The radiators are heating up but the water tank is not. I tried a test of turning off the radiator heating and leaving the hot water on and that seemed to work. However, if I turn the radiator heating back on even if outside of the water heating then the water does not get hot. Any ideas as to what to try and what the hell is going on as I've tried various things and nothing seems to work.

Thanks, Chris

Hi there, thank you so much for reaching out. I want you to do some tests to see how the relays in the Heat Link behave. Go next to the Heat Link and open the Nest app on a mobile device:

1. Select your thermostat to access the heating controls and make sure the screen is black, heating is off.
2. Turn up the temperature until the display goes orange, heating on, and listen for a clicking noise.
3. Turn the temperature back down until the display is black again, heating off, and listen for a clicking noise again.

Hi, thanks for the reply. I have tried that and I can hear the clicking noise in both cases. It seems to be that the house (radiator) heating is overriding the water (tank) heating. I'm not sure what to do. If I heat the house radiators then they are hot but the water is cold, if I turn the house heating off then the water is hot. This hasn't happened in the past as they could both happily co-exist. I'm a bit worried that I've set a setting that has done this.

Any help would be most appreciated as I'm kinda stumped as to what the issue is.

Thanks, Chris

Hi there, thanks for trying! Could you please try this test but for hot water? You'll have to go near the Heat Link, open the Nest app and boost the hot water a few times and let me know if you hear a click when you boost it and when you turn off the boost.

Hi there, just checking in with you. Did you manage to check my colleague's last message?
