How do I get condenser to turn off when I put nest on fan? I have 1st generation

My a/c is old& been fixed a few times. The lines freeze up and with my old thermostat I would turn it to on & fan so that it would run and defrost the lines..the condenser would turn off at that time.  when I tried that with the nest the  condenser didn’t shut off. Turning off the unit is not an option as it’s so hot

Hey there,
 
I would be glad to take a closer look and see if I can help answer your question. Fan settings can be a little confusing as your thermostat would have to be on to use the fan. I did find a helpful article that provides more details. Please let me know if that helps or if you are still having questions from here.
