How do I schedule my thermostat to turn off during certain hours and turn on other hours?

Ok, I'm using one of my nest thermostats for a unique situation.  I put it in my detatched garage.  So, I have a propane heater out there.  In the mornings at 5 am, I go out there and work out for an hour.  It's getting to be winter.  So, it'll be cold at 5 am.  So, I bought a nest thermostat to put out there.  But, it's a garage.  I don't want to heat it all the time.  Just maybe an hour before I go out there until I'm done working.  I don't want to wake up at 4 am just so I can turn on the heat in the garage using the app manually.  The safety is set to 40 which is probably fine.  I don't think I care if it kicks on at 40 all winter.  (We live in Tennessee... not the coldest... but still can get cold in the winter.)

Hello dmorlow,

Thanks for reaching out and for keeping up with another Nest thermostat.

I've got some more information for you on how you can set a manual temperature schedule. You can put your Nest thermostat on off if not in use, and it'll only turn on at a specific time with your preferred temperature by creating scheduled temperatures. Check this link for your guide.

Let me know if that helps.

Thanks,

Mark

I don't see anything in that link saying I can schedule the furnace to completely shut off at a certain time of the day and then turn back on another time of the day.  All it mentions is setting the comfort presets and times for those presets.

Hi dmorlow,

I just want to be sure we're looking at this exactly how you intend it. Are you looking for your HVAC system to be fully powered down, or just taken out of heating or cooling mode in off hours? If you're talking about an actual powering down, that is beyond the scope of the Nest Thermostat capabilities. Do you just not want it to come on outside of schedules? Is there no specific range you're concerned about? If you can clarify a bit more what you're trying to have happen, I'll be happy to work it out with you.

Thanks,

Jeff

I already made it work.  There was a toggle switch on the furnace that I could turn it on and off at.  I replaced that with a Kasa smart switch and now I can schedule it turning off and on.  I would've rather had the thermostat change into an off mode or whatever and keep the power on.  But, this is working.

Hey dmorlow,

I was actually going to suggest a smart strip or plug as a workaround solution. Just be aware that with the HVAC system powered down entirely, the Nest can't engage the emergency temperature if things get too cold to turn on heating to prevent pipe freezing. I'm assuming you've accounted for that, however. What I can do is pass your comments along as a feature request for our teams to see.

Aside from this, is there anything else you might need?

Thanks,

Jeff
