I just installed the 3rd Generation Nest Learning Thermostat. The wiring was a 4 wire low voltage. I confirmed that my system was compatible to install the Nest Learning Thermostat. I have attached the old thermostat wiring below. (W,G,R,RC,Y)
Here is what was matched on the new nest thermostat from old thermostat:
1. W -> W1
2. G -> G
3. R/RC - RC (Jumper Removed)
4. Y -> Y1
When testing the heating system the fan does not go on automatically when turning the heat on. When the fan is turned on manually the heat does work but can't get the heat to work automatically when turning the heat on.
In the Nest Pro-Installer Guide it mentioned that by default setting for fan control on the W1 wire is set to Don’t activate because most forced air gas heating systems will activate the fan automatically when the furnace (W1) is activated but in my cause this test failed the default setting.
In addition the guide also mentioned, if you test the furnace and the fan doesn’t activate, change this option to Activate. The thermostat will then call for both the furnace (W1) and fan (G) when heating.
I am just not seeing this configuration option in the installation menu on my thermostat. What do I need to do in order to get to that option so I can change it to see whether this resolves my issue with the fan be on automatically when the heat is turned on?

Hi, I have a similar setup (4 wires, no C). Just posted my issue, maybe you have a look? We could also talk, if you want? Might be easier. Thanks, JeanLuc

Hello folks,
Thank you for taking the time to let us know about your inquiries. I'd love to help.
@TechUser64, the fan can be manually operated or set to run on a predetermined schedule. It cannot be programmed to start or stop on automatically. Please take a look at this article and let us know if you need more help.
@JeanLuc, could you please tell us more about what's happening? Are you also having the same issue as the OP? If so, could you provide a rundown of all the steps you've tried?
Regards,
Mark
