I have a Nest Thermostat. My wife and K ahvs forgotten the PIN, and our internet service is out due to a severe storm today. We are unable to control our central air, which is now set to 63° and our Central Air will not stop running! It is 91° outside! How can I unlock the thermostat without tbe PIN or the App (no wifi)?

Hi Stravos G,

If your internet and/or Wi-Fi service is still out, the only way to regain access would be to reset the thermostat I'm afraid.
  1. Connect the Nest Thermostat display via USB to a computer.

  2. Verify that the Nest Thermostat mounts (appears as an attached drive icon).
  • If the Nest drive will not mount: Restart the thermostat and the computer.
  • If the Nest drive still won't mount: Connect another device to the cable to see if it appears as an installed device.
  • If it doesn't appear, use a different cable/port/computer.
If the Nest drive is successfully showing up on your computer, can you see a technicalinfo.PLIST file?

I am having the same problem (pin is lost; thermostat was given to me by a friend who wanted a simpler device; the NEST thermostat was already installed in her home when she bought it a few months ago; former owners of the house installed the NEST but did not provide pin to new owner).

I am able to connect it via USB cable to my computer and it shows up as an F: drive.  I can open the drive and see the technicalinfo.PLIST file.  Now what?

No what do you do? Please finish you solution.

thanks

Read my post using the link below for reasonably detailed instructions; however, be advised that you cannot reset the 4-digit PIN without contacting NEST support.  Although my steps are quite detailed, they do not entirely circumvent the need to contact NEST and they do not explicitly list every last detail and step.  NEST support must be enlisted to send you the correct "reset to factory original" file and to provide steps on how to change the filename:

Hi, I have the exactly the same issue. Can someone provide the next steps?

In the end I contacted Google Nest support over a chat session and they went through troubleshooting steps, finally they sent a file that reset the Nest device. Took around an hour and involved checking proof of ownership.

I don't have a pin and is not registered in the app

Then you are in the right place. Contact Google Nest support and follow the steps here:

https://www.googlenestcommunity.com/t5/Nest-Thermostats/Forgot-Nest-thermostat-pin-and-can-t-access-...

Contacting Google is non-optional. You will need their assistance in addition to the steps I published at the link above.

To contact Google, follow the link below. Note that there will be two buttons at the bottom of that page.  One says get help from the community which brings you here.  Don't click that.  Instead, click the one that says “contact us”.
