Hello I purchased a rental unit about two years ago and rented it out. I have new tenants now in the unit and they’re wanting to set up the nest under their name. I was not aware of the nest thermostat ownership was not released. I have no idea who owned a prior to us, we purchased the home With open door and they don’t have that information. How can we get ownership of the nest thermostat ?

Don't worry! Even though the previous owners didn't transfer ownership of the thermostat to you, there shouldn't be any problems getting it set up.
The process depends on the type of Nest thermostat you have. If you have a Nest Learning Thermostat or a Nest Thermostat E, you can disconnect the previous owner's account by going to Settings > Reset > Account Connection.
If you don't see these options, you'll likely need to follow this article on how to factory reset your thermostat.
Once the account is disconnected, your tenants can set up the thermostat with Google Home or the Nest app.
Let me know how it goes.

Angel
