I recently moved into an apartment with a Nest thermostat. When I moved in, it was working. Then I went on a trip and returned, and the A/C stopped working. It said it was a low battery, so I put in a new battery. Then it was error298 (Undetected wires Y-W-G-R)  and was not connect to wifi. I reset it. Downland the home app follow to the step but end up to not get it connect to the thermostat or something about c wire or wires aren't detected even countless time check the wires then I reset factory default now it at continue setup in the google home app and i been struck here for 3 hours try connect it.

Hi hollerGirl,

Thanks for reaching out to the Community. I am sorry that you are having issues with your Nest Thermostat connectivity. I’d be happy to help you. Let’s check it out.

Before we get started with further troubleshooting, let me ask you some important questions:

  1. What Nest Thermostat model do you have?
  2. Are you able to share a picture of your wiring?
  3. Have you followed any troubleshooting already?
  4. What type of system do you have? (Heat Pump or conventional type)

The E298 error on your Nest thermostat indicates an issue with the R wire, which is responsible for supplying power to your system. Since the batteries were changed and the thermostat does not connect, this error code is likely relevant. Here's how to troubleshoot the E298 error and get your device working again:

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Check the system power:
    • Make sure the power to the system is on. The power switch is usually in the breaker box, but in some homes, it's like a light switch near the HVAC equipment. There may be one or two switches: one for heat and another one for cool. Make sure the power is on for both, then check the thermostat.
  2. Check the thermostat wires: Note: If you're not comfortable working with electrical wiring, consult a qualified technician (Nest pro).
    • Remove the thermostat display.
    • Ensure that the wires are in the correct terminals.
    • Ensure that each wire has ⅜ inch (9.5 mm) of exposed wire.
    • Ensure that each wire is properly seated.
    • Turn on the power to the system, then check if the thermostat works.

If the above steps don't resolve the issue you can try the following articles for the Troubleshoot a "No power" alert on a Nest thermostat (E298, E448 or M20 help code) and to Troubleshoot when your thermostat won’t turn on. In addition please make sure you have replaced the correct batteries as instructed on the Batteries for Nest products guide.

Please keep me posted.

Best regards,

Mario
