Inconsistent preheating

I’ve had two nest thermostats for years. Model display-2.5.
I’ve started, or maybe just started noticing, that it doesn’t preheat smoothly. It comes on within an hour of the requested heat/time to preheat. It will run for a few minutes, then stop, then start up again. It does this multiple times and it doesn’t reach the requested temperature until about 30 mins late. I’m wondering if I have a failing sensor somewhere. ?

Hi DBealby,

Uh-oh! If you've noticed a change in the preheating behavior of your Nest Thermostats, it's possible that there could be an issue with one of the sensors or components. Here are a few troubleshooting steps you can try to identify the cause of the problem:

  1. Make sure that the temperature sensors on your Nest Thermostats are clean and free from any obstructions. Dust or debris buildup can affect the accuracy of the temperature readings and impact the thermostat's performance.
  2. Ensure that your thermostats are installed in an optimal location. They should be away from any heat sources, drafts, or direct sunlight that could influence the temperature readings. Improper placement can lead to inaccurate temperature measurements and affect the preheating behavior.
  3. Ensure that your Nest Thermostats are running the latest software version. Updates can address known issues and improve performance. You can check for updates through the Nest app or on the thermostat itself.
  4. Try performing a factory reset on your Nest Thermostats and then reconfigure them from scratch. This can help clear any software glitches or configuration issues that might be affecting the preheating behavior.

It's worth noting that the behavior you described could be influenced by various factors, including the characteristics of your HVAC system, the size and insulation of your home, and other environmental factors.

Let us know how it goes.

Best,

Zoe

Thanks so much. I have two thermostats and I have tried swapping them with no joy. They’ve worked well for years (maybe 9) so it is something new.  I’ll try everything you suggested and if no improvement I’ll get an HVAC guy in. I’ll let you know.
