Issues after Nest reset...

We recently moved into a rental unit that had a nest installed (believe 3rd generation). It was still tied to another account, so I decided to reset it…why not, I can just put my info in after it wiped out theirs. I wish I would have just come to this community prior to resetting!

Well I didn’t realize it would wipe out everything. Before the reset, heat was working just fine and no issues, literally just wanted to be able to control it from our phone. I called the landlord who wasn’t entirely sure about the wiring or nest settings, and we walked through some steps but it’s still acting finicky. He said there haven’t been any issues over the past 5 years.

I can't find where to attach pics, but I'll do my best to describe everything. (I have attached a reddit link where I make the same post, that has pictures). Reddit Link with pictures The wiring behind the nest shows Yellow to Y1, Green to G, Blue to O/B, Red to Rc, White to W1 and Brown to W2/Aux; everything else is empty (Y2, C, *, and Rh). The system is a Rheem HVAC system, all electric, and single fuel. No gas/furnace. I haven't changed any wiring.

The problem starts from the get go after reset. Seems to recognize as a dual system when it is indeed single fuel. I click homeowner, but says I need to go to Pro setup for dual system. This is despite me trying to click single fuel; it just defaults to dual. So I go to the Pro setup and just proceed. On the screen it says Completed/Check, I don't modify anything and just proceed.

I ultimately went through all the settings and added the account, but upon running the tests it would blow cold air instead of heat, and the outside fan would run which wasn’t the case before the reset.

I performed another reset, and this time went through the Pro setup (still no way to just select single fuel) and will still default to dual fuel. So I go to the Pro screen. On the nest screen, for W1 and W2, it originally shows gas, so I’m thinking change to electric, but despite this it still shows Alt heat (dual fuel) for W1 and Alt heat stage 2 (dual fuel) for W2. Just don't want to mess anything up as I've confirmed it's Single fuel, and the nest system says choosing one when it is in fact the other can mess up the HVAC.

I also used Chat GPT and it suggests possibly changing the O/B to B as this is specific to Rheem HVAC systems, which would help fix the cool air vs heat.

So, I’m stuck at the start up screen. I'm just trying to figure this out so I don't have to have anyone come out here to check on the system.

If I figure out how to attach pictures, I will. I also had pictures of the HVAC system (Model #RH1T2417STANJA) behind the thermostat with the diagrams as well as the AC unit (Model #RP1424AJ1NA); both of which show the model numbers and other info if that is of importance.

Much help would be appreciated..also I saw other posts with kind of similar issues (Single vs Dual Fuel) but nothing that I could apply to my specific situation.

Hi @Matreyno,

Thank you for reaching out to the Google Nest Community about the situation you're experiencing with your Nest Learning Thermostat, where the air conditioning turns on when you call for heat. I appreciate you taking the time to try some troubleshooting steps beforehand, including making some changes in the pro setup. The most recommended option is to contact a Nest Pro or your local technician who can perform the appropriate steps in the installation and setup of your system, as well as review your system to ensure there are no faults and that it is working correctly.

Please feel free to share any additional details you think might be relevant.

Best regards,

Eduardo
