Just bad design - QR code scan does nothing

Last weekend, I installed a Google Nest Thermometer. The install software was bad*, but I worked through it.

This weekend, I installed the Google Nest Learning Thermometer in a different heating zone. During install, I scan the QR code, the display gives a checkmark, and then goes back to the home screen. This has been reported several times in these forums and this isn't fixed.  The solution is that apparently, each time I want to install a product I have to install another app. Google acquired Nest in 2014. Now I know Google only has about 5 employees, so bothering to make Google Home work with all of their products is a terrible burden. It is apparently too much of a burden to even have the install procedure in Google Home tell you that you need the Nest app for some thermometers and not others.  This thermostat costs 5 times what a normal thermostat does and they can't bother using one app? They can't bother giving you a hint that you need two apps? Yes, the docs say use the Nest app for the Learning model, but after I just installed one Nest thermostat with only Google Home why would I presume that other products would work differently?

*Even in installing the basic model was a headache. Take a picture of your wiring. Sure. Do the rest of the install. Fine. Hmm, the C-wire connection is flaky.  Test it a few times, then don't give me any options other than "Hire a Pro' and lose the picture. I live in NH. So called "Pro"s did the original wiring here. They spliced wires in the middle of dry wall, in between fire stops no less. Every thermostat they installed was wired in backwards. Every thermostat was wired by a different "Pro" through they years.  Heck, while installing the thermostats I found live 220V electrical lines cut and left uncapped. That is what "Pro"s do around here. I value my home safety, I'll do it myself.  But I have no option while I debug the bad wiring to start over again and again. Take a picture. Of what? The old wiring was already removed the first time I went through the install instructions and the app forgets the prior picture once it says I should hire a "Pro". Who QA's this? Just save the photo in my photo gallery.

I'm really both shocked and disappointed with trusting Google on this. This is basic stuff.  I should have learned my lesson from how badly they have managed other applications (Google+, Google Talk, etc.).

Yes. It was just far more cumbersome than it needed to be.  Even for post install usage, I find I have to occasionally go into different apps depended on what I'm trying to do. That means searching for a feature in one app, and eventually looking for it in the other.
