Leaving Nest for New Owners -- Will Factory Reset Remove HVAC System Info?

We are leaving our Nest Learning Thermostat behind when we sell our home.  I have found instructions for removing the thermostat from my Google Home account and doing the factory reset.  My question is will I or the new homeowners be able to control the HVAC system manually from the thermostat dial until the create an account and add the thermostat?  Trying to figure out how to not leave the system uncontrollable.

The first thing you need to do is to go into your app and remove the nest thermostat from the app. By doing this, the new owner will be able to assign it to their nest account. This step is critically important and is often missed. Once you delete the thermostat, technically tap, remove thermostat in the app, the nest will report that it has no nest ID assigned. In the meantime, the system will continue to operate based on the current settings. You do not have to do a reset or anything like that. All you have to do is as I stated. Open your Nest app, or your Google Home app, go into settings, of the thermostat, and tap. Remove thermostat.

Thanks for following up.  Since we won't be closing on our sale until April 14, I won't be trying these steps until probably April 13.  I will reach out here if I have any issues.

Hello folks,

I wanted to stop by and see how I could help.

Thanks for assisting, Jenelyn.

@mauricec, in addition to what was shared by CoolingWizard, the Account Connection would be the best option, so you don't need to reset it to default. With this, it'll permanently delete the existing account and disconnect from the Wi-Fi network. The new homeowner can use it manually and connect it to their own account if they prefer.

Feel free to let us know if you have more questions in mind.

Regards,

Mark

Thanks for confirming, @Markjosephp .

As a security feature to prevent unauthorized removals of thermostats from accounts, when you do the remove staff, you will get a confirmation email sent to the registered email making sure that you intended to delete that thermostat from your account. If you get that email you know you’ve done everything correctly. Inform the new owners, that they will need to:

1. Get Internet service in the home,

2. Download the Nest App, Create a Nest account.

3. In the Nest App, tap Add, to add a thermostat.

4. The nest app instructions to go to the thermostat and obtain the PIN ID.

Hi, all.  I was able to successfully remove the Nest Thermostat from my Google Home and Nest accounts.  And, as @CoolingWizard described, the thermostat can still be used manually to control the HVAC until the new owners set up internet access.  Thanks everyone for the help and followup!
