So I possibly made the mistake of getting two nest thermostats thinking they'd be compatible with my oil burner setup... except it sounds like I might have needed to do the learning version. Looking in my thermostats I have a spare wire in one (the green), and seemingly nothing spare in the other unless I can split the white/blue or white/orange.
Do I actually need the learning thermostats to use just the W/Th lines? The solenoids in the basement appear to have far more wires than needed but I have no idea truly what I'm looking at with this rats nest.

The crazy part is the contractor that put in the “thermostat cable” used telephone/data twisted pair cable. The problem is the cable is 22 gage and a conventional thermostat cable that should be used is 18 or 16 gage. This is the reason they kept the pairs green/white and White/Green together.

Oh boy. Sounds right in line with the rest of the house. We already had to have most of it pulled and re-wired to fix it.

Did you install a HVAC a thermostat cable with at least 7 conductors?

Hey Faustus24,
Thanks for the update. A few questions: in what country you are located? Is it possible for you to find your system control panel? We will be needing to have a clear photo of the wires available on your control board.
Regards,
Jenelyn

Hey CoolingWizard, unfortunately no idea, this house is 70 years old and the previous owner passed away so we don't have anything to go on except the images. From what I'm seeing though it doesn't look like it. Presuming I'll have to swap to the learning version to use the existing wiring.
