Manually turning off/on even when scheduled - no time of use

We've had the nest for years and it's been a real battle.  We turned off ECO since most times we are gone, but one person working from home doesn't pass by or make enough noise or whatever to let it know someone is home. Also, thought this may help with the other issue we are having.  It's the start of summer so trying to get the thermostats scheduled for AC.

Where we live we have time of use, where it costs more to use power between 3pm - 6pm.  For summer I turn on "Cool" mode and have a  schedule:

2pm:   68 degrees  (to pre-cool before time of use)

3pm:   89 degrees (figuring this would turn off at time of use starts)

6pm:   74 degrees (when time of use is finished, so will cool down for evenings)

I just turned off eco mode again on app, not sure how the heck it keeps turning itself on.  Ensured the schedule was set properly on both our front and back thermostats.   Set mode to cool and the A/C kicked on.  It's after 4pm, so it should have determined schedule was for 89 degrees, at the temp is at 75, so it should not have kicked on.  This happens all the time and costs us big money (3 x cost during peak hours in the summer).

There is no option for "time of use" and I know there are many places that have this, not sure why scheduling doesn't have this option built in - time of use hours, weekday/weekend, and do you want to pre-cool, but I figured can manage through setting temps correctly.  However, I'm always catching it on at various times during these hours, so much so that I set a reminder on my phone to check if on at 3:15pm and turn to off.  What is the purpose of the schedule if doesn't adhere to the times and temps?

Any help would be appreciated.

Hello @WendellG13,

Thank you for reaching out to the community.

That must be frustrating to see your AC running during peak hours! I understand your concerns about the eco mode and the AC schedule. I also appreciate your effort in trying to fix this on your own. In the meantime, here are some things to check that might help:

Schedule and Manual Adjustments:

  • Double-check your schedule settings in "Cool" mode, verifying the start and end times for the 89-degree setting (3 p.m.–6 p.m.). Look for any accidental overrides or conflicts.
  • While not ideal, consider manually adjusting the temperature to 89 degrees during peak hours as a temporary solution.

Nest Behavior and Occupancy:

  • Nest thermostats can learn habits and adjust the schedule automatically. Try disabling "Auto-Schedule" in the Nest app settings to see if it improves adherence to your specific schedule.
  • Ensure "Home/Away Assist" is set to "Off" if you want the schedule to run regardless of someone being home. Also, try disabling "Eco Temperatures" within the Eco mode settings, as these might adjust the temperature outside of your schedule.

To help me diagnose further, could you let me know what type of Nest thermostat you have?

I appreciate your patience and hope these suggestions help you regain control of your Nest thermostat schedule!

Best regards,

Jorge.
