Move home, taking over existing thermostat

Friend has just moved home into property with existing nest thermostat. Previous owner still has control of thermostat via their app and not responding to requests to disconnect.   Is there anyway my friend can take control without previous owner co-operation.  I assume not, but your opinion would be appreciated

Yes, you can factory reset it physically on the thermostat.
