My Google Nest Thermostat is not retaining power

HenryMuss
Community Member

Display keeps suggesting "the thermostat is restarting. Back in a bit" flashing red light above display.

Insufficient power even though plugged in.

Not charging seems to be a lot of posts on this but no resolution.

Twice in the last four days my 3rd gen Nest had displayed a similar message; I cleared it the first time recharging the thermostat off the wall. Nothing with my HVAC system has changed, but the Nest took a software update earlier in the day the first time this behavior stated.

Hi everyone,

@HenryMuss, thanks for posting here in the Google Nest Community forum. We're sorry for any trouble this may have caused you. Have you tried charging the display of the Nest Thermostat? If not, try these steps:

  1. Pull off the thermostat display.
  2. Plug it into a USB port on your computer or a wall charger like the one you use to charge your phone.

A blinking light on the front of your thermostat confirms that it’s charging. The color of the light will depend on the battery level of the thermostat when you charge it. Usually, your thermostat will take about half an hour to recharge. But if the battery is fully drained, it can take as long as 2 hours to recharge.

Also, let’s gather the power reading of your Nest Thermostat. @jddarcy, since you’ve tried charging your thermostat, gather the power reading of your device. Follow the steps below.

For the Nest Learning Thermostat and Nest Thermostat E:

  1. Press the thermostat ring to bring up the Quick View menu.
  2. Turn the ring to Settings and press to select.
  3. Turn the ring to Technical Info and press to select.

For the Nest Thermostat 2020:

  1. Tap the touch bar to bring up the menu view.
  2. Slide your finger down to Settings, then tap to select.
  3. Slide your finger to Equipment > Power Info.

Keep us posted.

Best,

Renz
