My Nest thermostat is blinking green with a black screen.

Have no idea why they lock the threads on similar postings since most others get an offline solution. So I have the same issue as this thread: https://www.googlenestcommunity.com/t5/Nest-Thermostats/Blank-screen-and-green-flashing-light-loop-w...

I simply pulled it off the wall to paint around where the thermostat is mounted and got this error condition when I put it back on.  I tried a friend's thermostat that is the same and it works fine, so please no suggestions on the wiring.  I did charge it with a USB to wall charger and got the message connect to the base but nothing happens when I connect it. 

One thing I did notice, previously the bootup icon was a white house, now it is the Google G.

Please advise.
