NEST does not cool anymore

MichaelHFarren

I had my nest for about 2 years. 3 gen, etc. After 1 year, the nest backplate broke completely. Furnace and Heat Pump would not work at all. I called Nest, they shipped out a new backplate. About 6 months later, attempting to run cooling, the NEST WILL NOT Cool at all!! It starts my heat pump, but only runs heat! I called Nest support, NO HELP! They told me, sorry you can buy a new one, and that is all the help they have given me. There is no way i would ever buy another nest. I hooked up an old Honeywell thermostat, and everything works perfectly fine! The wiring is the EXACT SAME as it always was. THe google nest unhelpful rep just kept telling me to switch around wires. I had pleaded with them, to help me! I hooked up an old thermostat and everything worked perfectly fine! I have now had to take my useless nest off completely, and swap for a smart honeywell thermostat. Google Nest does not back their products, and leaves consumers out in the dark. I contacted Nest support many times, and all they have said is, just go buy a new one. This is honest truth. I have never been so angry and frustrated in my life with a billion dollar company such as google.

I had the same issue with mine. it started Saturday. it would not switch my heat pump over to cool. I showed cool on the thermostat but not at the HP. I'm wondering if there was some kind of screwy update. we had to put a jumper in to switch the mode to cool.

Mine had worked just fine for over 2 years prior to this weekend.

How is the Nest Learning Thermostat wired?

When was the last time your system had an HVAC tech look at it?

It's wired exactly like the picture in the instructions showed for installation. Tech was the one that said it was the thermostat. Tech was the one that jumped it to only run in cool mode for now.

I had a technician come out the very next day, after testing everything, he ruled it down to the thermostat. As in the other post, he jumped the wires together and proved that it was the Nest! Again, hooking up a Honeywell thermostat, resolved the issue completely!! I am horrified with Nest support telling me sorry about that, but here is a link to BUY A NEW ONE!! Ha!! That was the funniest thing I have ever heard in my life. Needless to say, I would never purchase a nest again. The fact that google nest didn’t offer to replace it, or actually do something? That is a joke.

@MichaelHFarren

Did you go through nest support?

I've had to have mine jumped as well, for now. I tried the O/B settings, but didn't seem to help.

My next step would be to contact them "online"

Which wires were jumped? Any pictures?

Same problem here. Worked great for 18 months, now rising heat blows when it says cool. Even worked for 1 day during spring last month. Switched to our Honeywell (same as you) and that works fine.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

I jumped the red, yellow, orange and green. this was just to test that the cooling still worked. This is a nest problem hands down. I wish they would stand behind their product. Totally disgusted. The Honeywell works perfect!!

Thanks for the reply and info. Was out of town camping the last 5 days. Is the jump wire config not recommended to run permanently? Our Nest was a gift so I'm hoping to get it working without having to eventually tell a family member it didn't work.

Hello all,

I did eventually contact Nest/Google support and did some troubleshooting with them.

They had me remove jumper (I can't remember which was jumped), and had me switch wires behind faceplate. Started to work.

Had me re-wire how it was before, and had me change the O/B setting as mentioned in my previous post (changing equipment setting for heat pump from O to B, or vice versa).

I had to wait about 5-10 minutes, but looks good now

I asked why that would change, and they told me someone must've changed it, which is not the case.

Anyways, so far so good. Seems good now.

That is the craziest thing I have ever heard. I switched my O/B wires to test as well, but it never worked. I guess if you have a chance, I’d be curious to know / see exactly how they have you set up now. Really odd to say the least.

Most of my info is on this board.

Once I removed jumper, the chat technician had me swap G and O/B wires and it started working (when you swap wires, make sure to power off breaker). After it worked, we replaced wires to regular way, and he had me switch the heat pump setting to O instead of B. And all was working:(

Not sure why.
