Nest 3rd Gen Thermostat Autoaway not working

I have 6 third generation Nest thermostats, one still on old Nest login, one on a separate Google account and 4 on my usual Google account. I’ve used these Nests in 6 properties for up to 10yrs and I’m familiar with their operation - I use the autoaway record to discover when guests and housekeepers are in the properties and to turn off the heating automatically. The autoaway function started to fail in some thermostats only around 2 years ago. The first two, on their own Nest and Google accounts work perfectly. Of the other 4, on my Google account, only one autoaway function works. I don’t enable any phones with the thermostats but tested with one and it operates OK.  I have contacted Nest help on several occasions but we cannot fix the problem. The 2nd oldest thermostat on its original Nest account works perfectly. Should I scrap the faulty units and buy new or is there a possible fix?

Hi itsjk,

Uh-oh! I'm sorry to hear about the issues you're experiencing with the Home/Away Assist function on your Nest Learning Thermostats. It's frustrating when a feature you rely on no longer works as intended. Follow these steps and skip the ones you already did:

  1. To ensure optimal performance and functionality of your Nest Learning Thermostats, ensure they are running the latest firmware version, which can be accessed through the Nest app or the Nest support website for instructions on firmware updates.
  2. To resolve the Home/Away Assist issue with Nest Learning Thermostats, perform a reset by erasing all settings and returning the devices to their default state. Go to Settings > Reset > All Settings. After the reset, re-set the thermostats and configure the Home/Away Assist function to resolve potential software glitches or configuration issues.
  3. The Home/Away Assist function relies on stable Wi-Fi connectivity, and poor or intermittent connectivity can affect its accuracy. If necessary, troubleshoot your Wi-Fi network or relocate the thermostats to improve signal strength, ensuring the thermostats have reliable connectivity.

Let us know if that helps.

Best,

Zoe
