Problem started with the system on cool and putting out heat. Called HVAC guy and he came out and noticed the system had taken a voltage spike burning out several boards and causing the heat to get stuck on. The Hvac company stated that the nest had caused a voltage spike shorting out the condenser unit. It was recommended that we replace the unit. We went ahead and had the whole system upgraded by an addl 1/2 ton which cost us $6350.00 to replace the whole system. It was recommended that we throw away our nest and from now on only use Honeywell thermostat systems. The nest cost us $6300 in damages. it had been using that thermostat for 7 years without a problem until google took over the nest project. It seem to change the wiring setting to a default config attributing to a electrical surge.

Hi zombieJoe,
Yikes! I'm sorry to hear about the issues you experienced with your HVAC system and the damage caused by a voltage spike. It's unfortunate that you had to replace the entire system due to the damage.
Voltage spikes can cause damage to electronic devices, including thermostats, due to factors like electrical surges from the grid, lightning strikes, or internal electrical issues. If you have concerns about the Nest Thermostat's wiring configuration, send a photo for assistance. It's unfortunate that you experienced significant damage and incurred a substantial cost to replace the system. Surge protection measures should always be in place to safeguard sensitive electronic devices from potential voltage spikes.
If you believe the voltage spike was caused by the Nest Thermostat, fill out this form and let me know once you're done.
Best,
Zoe
