Nest 3rd Generation Thermostat Lost WiFi Connection Permanently!

We purchased (2) two Nest 3rd Generation thermostats less than two years ago and one of them failed and will no longer connect to the WiFi.  I contacted customer support and they tried a few things and confirmed it had failed and would need to be replaced.  I told them it appears that this was a common problem with this thermostat and asked if there was anything they could do for me, maybe a discount on a new one as it was past the one year warranty.   He said mine was about two years old as he could see when we initially logged the units into their system.  He said if I had a receipt, he could pass me onto another group that would discuss this with me, but without it, I would just have to buy a new one.   He has my initial login data for the two $250.00 thermostats showing when I signed in, that should be good enough!    I think this is terrible support for an expensive thermostat that has know WiFi failure issues.
