Nest Controller 3rd Gen on (orange) but not heating up the radiators. Uk Combi boiler

Hi,

I’ve had a nest controller (3rd gen) for a couple of years since having a new Combi boiler installed. (Gloworm). All was working well up until a few months ago, the nest controller is orange but the radiators are not warming up.

The plumber insists the boiler is fine as the boiler kicks in as soon as the hot water tap is switched on and I have a work around by clicking the heatlink to manual and back again.

I have reset the nest controller but still no joy. Is the heatlink on the way out or is there something else that I’ve overlooked? Whilst it’s not a big problem it’s very annoying coming back to a freezing house!

Can someone let me know why this is happening?

Thanks

Thanks for reaching out here @JackBiscuit . I would be happy to try and assist.

It is great to hear you already did some checks with an installer.

Just to clarify, you turn on the manual mode on the Heat Link, you turn it off and then you can turn on the heating from the thermostat, correct? Once it reaches the set temperature that you requested and it turns off the heating it does not turn it back on unless you do the manual mode switch again?

Thanks Alex, that’s correct. For example if I set the thermostat to 20 and then switch the heatlink to manual and back again the radiators kick in.
Once the radiators have reached the temperature and the heating switches off, the house temperature on the nest can show 18 and the nest is orange but again no heat from the radiators. This is not consistent though as it will work as it should but then stop working.
It is frustrating to say the least.
To be honest, I haven’t much faith in the heatlink as I have another one in a different property where the heatlink failed completely just out of warranty and I had to purchase a whole new thermostat  just to get a new heatlink, which is ridiculous.
Any help is appreciated. Thanks

It is certainly a very peculiar behavior and I am sorry to hear you had difficulties with another unit as well. Let us first do a quick clicking test on the Heat Link. That will give us an idea on what's going on in the Heat Link.

Go with the Nest app next to the Heat Link and make sure the temperature is turned down, so the display is black. Turn up the temperature until the display goes orange and listen for any clicking noise from the Heat Link. After also have a quick look if the boiler starts up, if it has a display perhaps on it and shows it is heating or any sign from it.

After, turn the heating down until the display goes black, heating off, and listen again for a click from the Heat Link. After check the boiler state again, this time it should be off.

Let me know what the results are after. If you hear not clicks and don't see any activity from the boiler when you turned the heating on you can also turn on the manual mode after the previous tests and see if you hear the click and see the boiler activate.

Thanks, I’ll give that a go later.
