Nest Gen 3 three chirps

jbryanprice
Community Member

My Nest Learning Thermostat Generation 3 makes three quick chirps at random times throughout the day.

We’ve had the head unit (but not the backplate) replaced, but the problem persists. It was infrequent at first install two years ago (once a week or so maybe) but now it happens 4-8 times per day.

The battery level always shows 3.7 or so volts, and no error code appears on the device when it happens. I have an audio recording of the chirps I can upload.

Nothing in the downloaded JSON logs from my Google Nest data shows why this is happening.

The professional installer who put it in is at a loss as to its exact cause; they’re guessing it’s related to the power wire but they’re just guessing. They replaced the unit but it didn’t fix anything.

How do I dig in to the underlying logs of the unit to locate the cause of this? I am a software engineer so if I need to hook up to the USB-C port I’m willing to try whatever works.

I need to know how to identify the cause with certainty; I don’t want to rewire my home just because I’m guessing it’s about a power line.

Thanks for any help or contact person you can offer me. This is driving us all nuts.

Bryan

Hi @jbryanprice,

Thank you very much for posting this information in this community! I understand your Nest Learning Thermostat (3rd gen) is randomly chirping between 4 to 8 times a day, and replacing the head unit hasn't resolved it. I appreciate you providing the details and checking the online logs, which include the battery level; therefore, the team would like to know more about this behavior. When you get a chance, please fill out this form. Remember to include the link to this post. Let me know when you’re finished. From there, we'll contact you via email.

Feel free to keep me posted.

Regards,

Eduardo

I’ve made a copy of this thread on the form you provided, along with a short summary of the issue.

Thanks for any help you can offer me.

Thanks to a test devised by the Google Nest techs, I was able to determine that the chirps were actually coming from our smoke detector that’s in the same small hallway - not from the Nest unit itself.

A little embarrassed for not considering this sooner, but glad to know our new A/C has been working just fine the whole time.

Thanks Google!

Thank you so much for confirming that this issue with the chirps has been resolved and that it was the smoke detector! Don't feel embarrassed; these are things that can happen to any of us, but I'm overjoyed that your new A/C has been working very well during all this time.

If you have situations where we can help you, don't hesitate to contact this community.
