My installer has confirmed that our Nest heatlink device has power but does not work. It is just out of warranty. I cannot find replacement parts from Google. I’m told there is a replacement service, but we need heat NOW, the device is apparently easy to replace (if you can get it) and although the community discussion suggests that BOXT will do the (simple) job, it’s necessary to enter a case number from Google. So where is my Google case number?

Have you contacted Google direct as this is a community forum. Try them and you will get hold of someone from Google direct. I don't know of a replacement service out of warranty, but Google have replaced faulty heat links. Give them a try and see what they have to say, you will then get a case number also.
Obviously the the easier way is to tell your retailer you have a faulty unit, as they are really responsible.

It may sound stupid, but how do I contact Google direct?

Your not far wrong there!
I would type in a search bar ie: Google Nest Contact Number
Then I would click the first option available, [the one that says CONTACT US] and follow the instructions.
Obviously a quicker way is to tell the retailer to repair/replace
