Nest Learning Termostat Setup: QR Code Scan Errors Out

hamlin

Just installed a learning thermo + downloaded Google Home app. When I scan the QR Code on the Nest in the Google Home app, I get an error and cannot proceed through linking/setup process. I then have tried to input the 6 digit code, which then brings me to a white screen on my Home app that says I need to input the last 4 digits of my serial number, however this screen has no input field or Next button where I can input these values. Looks like a bug on both workflows???

I checked versions of Nest software, Home, and Android to be sure and everything is up-to-date.

Hello hamlin,

I'm sorry to hear you're having an issue setting up your new Nest Thermostat. I'd be happy to take a look at this for you.

If you have the Nest Learning Thermostat 3rd generation, it should be added to the Nest app. But if you have the mirror-finished Nest Thermostat, use the Google Home app. With this, make sure that your phone's Bluetooth is enabled and that no other Bluetooth devices are connected during the setup. Inspect that all wires are properly connected and the tabs are pushed down. Also, give these steps a try.

For the Nest Thermostat 2020 model:

  1. Remove the thermostat display from its base.
  2. Take the batteries out for at least 2 minutes before plugging them back in.
  3. Open the Google Home app.
  4. Create a new Home structure and proceed with adding it to the app.

For the Nest Learning Thermostat and the Nest Thermostat E:

  1. Press and hold the thermostat screen for 10 seconds until it shuts down to restart.
  2. Once ready, proceed with the initial thermostat screen setup and skip the Nest App and Internet Connection options.
  3. When finished, go to the Network settings and connect to the Wi-Fi network, then proceed with the Nest App option for the QR code or the Entry Key.
  4. Add it to the Nest app.

Let me know if that helps.

Regards,
Mark

Hi Mark, thanks this worked. So answer here is I own the Nest Learning thermostat. Why isn't it compatible with Google Home? It is frustrating to have to use multiple google apps to manage my devices, being able to easily manage everything under one app was part of the sell for buying a Nest. Why does the Learning model require a dedicated app?

Hey there,

I'm glad it worked! The Google Home app was fairly new to the market before the Nest Learning Thermostats, and only the Nest Thermostat 2020 model is completely integrated with the app. But no worries! Your Nest Learning Thermostat still works with the Google Home app. Make sure that you used the same email accounts in the Google Home app with your thermostat so it would automatically appear on the homepage. If so, check for other available home structures where it might be located.

Let me know how it goes.

Best,
Mark
