Nest Learning Thermostat Causes Clicking Noise on Outside A/C Unit

Hi, I recently moved and we brought our Nest thermostat with us. I installed it using the following matches:

Existing (old thermostat) - Color - New (Nest)

AUX/E - white - W2 (aux)

G - green - G

O/B - orange (heat pump) - O/B

C - blue - C (important to note there is a C-wire and it is functioning)

Y - yellow - Y1

R (with jumper to Rc) - red - Rc

Cooling works as expected (I live in Florida, so haven't tested the heat yet, nor will I need it anytime soon) but the issue I have run into is that the outside A/C unit starts clicking when it has been off for awhile. Sometimes the clicks can happen constantly, other times they are very intermittent. From searching previous posts and Nest help it appears this is a fairly common issue but it is typically blamed on the lack of a C (common) wire to provide 24V of power. My system has a C wire and the technical specifications in the Nest settings confirms that it is getting 200ma of power from the C wire. What could be causing this issue?

Note: heat pump, settings think I have a dual fuel system (not sure if I do, but I do have a gas connection that could be the backup for the heat pump) but I don't think this could be the cause of the issue?

Appreciate any help/advice!

I have the clicking issue on my new boiler system by Lochnivar. Constant clicking of the zone control. No ground wire here either, just a red and a white wire.

Hey all_natur_al,

Thank you so much for reaching back out and letting me know you are still having trouble. I have looked into the issue further, and from what I have found. There is a chance this could be a power issue, as you were saying. If you are hearing the clicking noise when the HVAC system is off, I would recommend having a Nest Pro come out and take a closer look. They would be able to isolate the issue and ensure the device is working properly.

Best regards,

Jake
