Nest Learning Thermostat: QR code not recognized, after manual entry... SN does not match (SOLUTION)

I successfully installed a 'plain' Nest Thermostat is few weeks ago upstairs. Now attempting to install a Nest Learning Thermostat downstairs. As instructed, I fire up Google Home and hit the '+' answer the initial questions and finally get to the 'scan QR code' step...

ISSUE #1:  GH claims "Error! Unable to start device pairing. Configuration not available."  I click 'OK' and I am kicked all the way back to the Google Home page... (argh : /

Solution: Do not select "Nest Thermostat" (This is a precise brand name for a specific Nest product, not a collective noun that casually references any Nest-branded thermostats. Instead choose the "Other Nest Thermostats', which will require you to install the Nest app, etc.

Great tip! For absolute clarity:

  • Nest Learning Thermostat and Nest Thermostat E must be setup in the Nest app.
  • Nest Thermostat (released in 2020) must be setup in the Home app.

A great article that helps you work out which model you have:
