Nest Learning Thermostat Randomly Turns boiler on/off

Hello - I recently instaled a Nest Learning thermostate about 3 weeks ago .

It controls the Heating and Hot Water . My house runs on an oil boiler if that makes a difference but i have set the settings to tell it this .

System was working fine for about a week but then i was waking up in the night to find that the boiler was running randomly for 10/15 mins at a time then turning off. The heating wasn't on as the radiators where cold and the hot water wasn't hot. The nest app was telling me the heating was off and the hot water was off. I have changed all the "SMART SETTINGS " to off . so the "pre heating feature, water disease feature is off etc and it still happens. The only I can stop is by physically turning my boilers power off. Even when I have it set to "off"  on the app.

It only seems to happen at night but its starting to get very annoying and my boiler just seems to be burning oil for no reason. When i check the last days history it doesn't show the heating /hot water being on either.

Thanks

The first thing, telling the stat you are on oil doesn't make any difference, it doesn't know that really. That can be set to anything, it's for your settings, the Nest hasn't got a clue!!!

Oil systems can be a little odd unlike gas ones, would you by any chance have a really old boiler?

You say you have set the bacteria, eco, and safety tempreture correct? The safety isn't set to a high number is it?

Hi thanks for the reply .

I didn’t think it would matter with the oil setting but just wanted to explain all .

MY eco temp is set to 9 and my safety temp is to 4.5(default) .
to be clear . My house sits at around 13/14 with the heating off . So it’s not like the house is getting to anywhere near the safety temps .

Forgot to say . The boiler is only 3 years old . It’s relatively new and got serviced 2 months ago with no issues.

Sounds like you have covered most things, best to get the installer back. They will then confirm on site easier.

Hello folks,

Thanks for reaching out. I know it has been a while, but I wanted to ensure that everything was covered here.

I appreciate your help here, Frustratedddd.

@eddyhall1995, dealing with unexpected boiler activity can be quite bothersome, especially when it disrupts your sleep. Let's try to troubleshoot this together.

  • Since the issue occurs mainly at night, it might be related to the schedule or some specific settings. Double-check your schedule in the Nest app to ensure there are no unintended temperature adjustments during the night. Also, verify that the thermostat is in a location where it can accurately measure the ambient temperature.
  • Considering you've already turned off the smart features, it's a bit puzzling that the boiler continues to run. Have you tried a full reset of the Nest Thermostat? Sometimes, this can help resolve software glitches.
  • Additionally, it could be beneficial to inspect the wiring and connections between your Nest Thermostat and the boiler. Loose or faulty connections might lead to erratic behavior. If you're not comfortable doing this yourself, it's advisable to seek professional help to ensure everything is properly set up.

Let us know if you need more help.

Best regards,
Mark
