Nest Learning Thermostat turn off when on holiday and turn back on on the date of return.

You would think this should be a simple task for a Nest Thermostat but so far a solution has eluded me.

I have tried setting up home and away assist then check after I am away but then on returning find the heating has turned back on and been running most of the time I am away and the house empty. While away my phone IOS will usually be turned to Flight mode a number of times. I believe this may confuse the Nest and it turns back on again. 

I would simply like to turn it to off as I leave programing a date and time to turn it back on for when I return. Currently I set and alarm to manually turn it back on but would have thought this should be simple for the Nest Thermostat to do?

Can any one suggest how I can achive this simple task?

We understand it can be frustrating when your thermostat isn't working quite right. It sounds like your phone's airplane mode might interfere with its ability to detect when you're away from home. When it's on, the thermostat might not receive the information it needs to know you're not home.

Another great option is to create a schedule for your thermostat. This lets you tell it exactly what temperature you want on different days and times.

Thank you for trying to help. Yes I believe it is the aeroplane mode causing the problem making Home Away Assist (HAA) not work. As most trips start with the need to use aeroplane mode for one reason or another this causes HAA to fail.  The time the Nest turned my heating back on coincided with the time I used aeroplane mode. What surprised me was it did not go back to away mode when aeroplane mod was turned off when I landed in a different country. The heating continued to operate while away so at least the house was warm on my return but I made no saving as hopped for with HAA.

Currently I do have a weekly schedule set up for when I am home but do not want to reprogram this for when I am away then reprogram it for my return. So I guess I will have to continue to turn the nest off and set an alarm on my phone to remind me to turn it back on when I know when I am heading back. 

My old programmable thermostat allowed me to tell it I was going away for x days but I could not communicate with it whilst away. 

Hopefully this will be seen as a requirement and the software will be modified. To cover trips away from home allowing haa to work as intended. 

I would like to hear if anyone else has a solution for this problem.
