Nest Learning Thermostate won't stop heating randomly

I bought a Nest Learning Thermostat last year and it worked well until some weeks ago when randomly it won't stop calling for heat after reaching the set temperature. This behavior (malfunction) does not follow any logic. It happens very randomly, like once every other day or so.

When this happens, the device (even in the app) doesn't show orange background color, but the zone control continues getting power and keeps the furnace running.

When I notice the increase in the room temperature, as a workaround, I go in the app (or thermostat), raise the temp set to a higher level than the room temp, wait for the app (or thermostat) to show orange background, and then lower the temperature set to the desired level and right then the furnace shuts off. This workaround always works which makes me believe the issue is in the thermostat device.

I already tried checking the wires and re-booting the device with no luck.

As you can imagine, I'm always very concern when I'm out of the house keeping an eye on the app to make sure temp is under control. When is very annoying is when it happens at night as we wake up in a sauna.

Even more annoying is that most of the savings we were looking forward to achieving with this device are gone.

What options do I have here to fix it or even replacing it? Thanks!

More details on my set up:

  • Equipment: Gas/Forced Air
  • Thermostat Technical Info:
    • Model: Display-3.7
    • Backplate-5.26
    • Software: 6.2-27

Hello nester14,

I'm sorry to hear about the issues you're experiencing with your Nest Learning Thermostat. It sounds frustrating, especially with the inconsistent behavior and the impact on your energy savings.

Given that you've already tried checking the wires and rebooting the device without success, there are a few additional steps you might consider. Since you've checked the wiring and attempted a reboot without success, you might want to consider the following steps:

  1. You might consider performing a factory reset on your Nest Thermostat. This should be done cautiously, as it will erase all your settings.
  2. Make sure the thermostat wires are completely inserted to the terminals
  3. Ensure that your thermostat's software is up-to-date. Sometimes, a firmware update can address glitches or bugs. You can check for updates in the thermostat settings.
  4. Check for any possible power-related issues. Gather the power readouts in the Technical Info and inspect for any wiring reports or message codes.

Let us know how it goes.

Best regards,
Mark
