Hi,
My house wiring has no C wire. All I have is oil heat and no AC. The thermostat has one R connection and one W connection. Those are the only two wires I have. But my heat keeps turning off and I am 99.5% sure it is the lack of stable power to Nest from no C wire. I purchased a standard two wire power adapter but when I hooked it up, the furnace did not respond and the light on the nest blinked yellow. The plug for the adapter also got very warm. I combined one wire from the adapter with the house red wire and connected them to R. The white cable stayed in white and the other wire from the adapter I plugged into the C connector. I saw a set of instructions on Google to do this. Can I make a standard two wire 24 v power adapter work on this?
What am I doing wrong? Thanks.
Dan.

I don't think you have a 1st Gen Learning Thermostat.
What does your Nest thermostat look? Take a look at this link for help identifying it.
How to tell which Nest thermostat you have

not sure how to tag you. I tried to upload a picture but it did not let me. It has a USB connection in the back to charge the thermostat but that does not seem to help. 54VEKL is the number below the QR code on the back of the thermostat.
I think it needs a new thermostat but I don’t know what is the best model to buy for a heating system with no C wire. Heat keeps starting (after I do a restart) but then at some point just stops. I know there is a Nest power adapter but I have no idea how to wire that to the furnace.
Thanks for your reply.

Hi, I'm wondering if this power issue is new? And if you are in the Kirkland/Seattle area? We came home to an original "nest thermostat" (not learning model, this is the bowl shaped one our local PSE gave us for free)) saying "no power" with an error message. At 2am Tuesday the furnace or problem had been cited for 29 hours. We're not sure if it is shutting the furnace down by with no power to the Google nest thermostat, or the nest citing "no power" because the furnace shut it itself down due to some functioning problem first. It seems like to me, if the furnace stopped working, the nest should still have power to show us how cold it is and how it's not working. Instead, it goes to sleep, takes over a minute to wake up and then tries to bring up a temperature. All the problem solving for this power error message goes to wiring. None say what would change when it worked for years and then suddenly didn't (new batteries didn't help).
