Nest Thermostat (3rd Gen) won't stay in Eco mode

Rob19

Hi there, I have a Nest Thermostat that doesn't stay in Eco mode reliably.  Auto-Schedule is turned off.  I even deleted the schedule I had manually entered.  When I manually put it in Eco mode, it may stay there for several days but then I find it has randomly switched to Heat on its own.  I saw another post about this (closed now) but they mentioned a factory reset (not sure how to do this).  Any advice?

Hello Rob19,

Thank you for taking the time to let us know about your inquiry. I'd be happy to take a look into this for you.

If the room or indoor temperature drops below or beyond the temperature you've set on your Eco settings, heat will automatically turn on in order to maintain the temperature. Please take a look at this article to learn more about eco-temperatures and let us know if you need more help.

Regards,

Mark

Thanks for the reply, but I'm a bit confused because the article says "When you manually set your Nest Learning Thermostat or Nest Thermostat E to Eco Temperatures, it will stay in that mode and won’t automatically switch back to heating or cooling until you manually switch it to one of those modes."  I don't see why it's switching modes.  It should stay in Eco mode and maintain the minimum temp I've specified.  Could a power failure result in it changing modes?

Hey there,

I get your point, Rob19. I appreciate your thoughts about this. Let's see what's going on.

To isolate:

  • Is there anyone else in your house who has access to your thermostat?
  • Did you invite them as a home member via the Google Home app?
  • Were there any instances that your thermostat went on "away" status?
    • This usually happens when you're away from your house; the app will switch to "away" status if it is enabled. Then, your thermostat will automatically switch to heating or cooling when someone comes home or if it senses motion.
  • Disable the Home and Away Assist to ensure that it won't switch modes.

Please observe and keep me posted on how it goes.

Regards,

Mark

Thanks for the continued troubleshooting.  Nobody else has access and "home and away" are disabled.  There was nobody in the house when the mode switched.

Hi Rob19,

I appreciate you letting me know. Despite the fact that Eco mode ought to keep the room at a comfortable temperature, there's still another potential explanation for why the heat suddenly came on: when it was unable to maintain the temperature range. Your thermostat will therefore turn on the heating until your house warms up in order to achieve the desired temperature. Please check out the link I shared above under "How Eco-Temperatures Work" and let me know if you have more questions.

Thanks,

Mark

Hi there, thanks for the follow up.  I don't think I got any resolution, because I don't think there's any explanation for why the thermostat would change mode from Eco mode to Heating mode.  Eco mode is designed to command heat from the furnace to maintain the minimum specified temperate.  It doesn't need to change to Heat mode to do that.  Having said that, my thermostat has not changed unexpectedly on me since I first posted, so I can't tell if that odd behavior has really stopped.

Hello everyone,

@Rob19 thanks for getting back to us and for sharing with us your update about your Nest Thermostat's Eco and heating mode behavior. Seems like it's an intermittent issue and requires more monitoring. We would suggest you continue monitoring the issue and in case it happens again, You may consider the factory reset that you're referring to. On your Nest Thermostat’s display, go to Settings>  Reset>  Reset All Settings. Remember, after resetting your Nest Thermostat, all of your recorded histories, set schedules and customized settings will get removed and will go back to the factory default settings. Hit this link for more information.

I appreciate the help, Mark.

Emerson
