Nest Thermostat Connected But Not to My Account - SOS

I am not a Luddite, but I must admit the challenges of trying to connect the Nest thermostat to my Nest/Google Home account have me rethinking my position on "smart" devices. 

The problem simply stated is this: The Nest thermostat came with the house I recently purchased. It may be that the prior owners failed to remove the thermostat from their app, for the thermostat is connected, just not to my app. The insurmountable obstacle is the pesky entry key. One can only get an entry key with a thermostat that is not connected to an account. It is quite the Catch-22. 

The situation is beyond frustrating. Not even my technically savvy 30 something son can figure this one out. 

If there is a genius out there with a simple solution (even a complex one will do), please share your much needed expertise with an apparently technically challenged 70 something.  

Did I mention that there are three Next cameras in the wings waiting to be connected? Goodness me. It is a challenge.
