Nest Thermostat E error

wmnRtist

I have had my Nest Therm E hooked up for 3 years. It has worked flawlessly. Today, getting my heater ready for winter, I received an E182 error. I have checked the W1 wire and it is connected fine. Nothing has changed since the install of the Nest Therm so I am wondering what the issue is.

Do you have a C wire connected to the thermostat?

I know that Nest states a C wire isn't required, but in the real world, a C wire is required more than not.

The E182 error means there is an over-current condition detected by the Nest. No C wire can sometimes cause this error, and other times a relay in your furnace could be starting to fail. You never see this type of problem with the old-style thermostats as they don't monitor the voltage and current draw on each terminal like the smart thermostats do.

I dont have a C wire. When it was installed all that was available is red and W1. It worked fine for 2 seasons. Now it doesn't. The transformer is buzzing and clicking too.

It sounds like you are saying an non-smart thermostat would be my only option? The furnace is old.

All two-wire systems will kill the battery in a Nest thermostat after a few years. The power stealing that Nest uses to keep the batteries charged just doesn't work correctly with only two wire.

The easiest way to add a C wire is to use the Google Nest Power Connector and an external 24Vac transformer. Installing these and wiring them in is not very hard.

Thank you. Do you happen to know if there is a youtube specific to the install? If not I will search. I am a visual learner and it would make more sense along with looking at the instructions.

Hi folks,

I definitely wanted to stop by and see how I could help.

@Patrick_Caezza, thanks for sharing how C wire or Nest Power Connector works.

@wmnRtist, I'm sorry if you have to go through this. We'd like you to have a better experience using your Nest thermostat. Here are some references to help you install your Nest Power Connector on your HVAC system.

Please let me know if that helps, or if the issue still persists.

Thanks,

Mark
