Nest Thermostat GEN3 Weak Mounting Tabs

Dangit
Community Member

Hello all, long time Nest Thermostat Gen3 owner, I actually own 5 in various properties. In my main home, the oldest unit I have is no longer gripping tightly to the base. The tabs on the Thermostat have weakened and do not gold it tight to the base to keep it charged and connected to the system. The heat went to 57f last night as a result.

The reason for the tabs not to hold are the cables not flush with the mount plate, well most of the time that is.

Another reason is the wall plate installed on a none flat wall. Over time the stress on the wall plate will not hold the display.

Have a look and see if the cables are proud of the wall plate, or the plate is not laying flat Upload a picture of the wall plate if you can. One from the side really.

I checked  the wires and plate, they are flush and flat. The unit in question was once downstairs because I went as far as swapping the upstairs unit with the downstairs unit. The problem is following the oldest unit. I would say the tabs are not weak and not keeping it secure to the mounting plate. Does anyone have any savvy ideas for making that tab stronger or maybe thicker? I tried some clear tape in hopes of it being thicker and grabbing, but it didn't work.

Hi folks,

Thanks for chiming in, @Frustratedddd

@Dangit, yikes! I'm sorry to hear about the issue you're experiencing with your Nest Learning Thermostat 3rd generation. If the tabs on the thermostat have weakened and are no longer holding it tightly to the base, causing it to lose connection and affect the heating system, here are a few suggestions to address the problem:

  1. Clean the thermostat and base: Over time, dust and debris can accumulate on the tabs and base, potentially affecting the connection. Gently clean the tabs and base with a soft, dry cloth to remove any dirt or debris that may be interfering with the connection.
  2. Check for physical damage: Inspect the tabs and base for any visible damage or wear. If you notice any cracks or other signs of damage, it's possible that the tabs may need to be replaced. Contact Nest/Google Support or refer to the manufacturer's documentation for guidance on obtaining replacement parts.
  3. Adjust the positioning: Try repositioning the thermostat on the base to see if it improves the connection. Make sure the thermostat is aligned properly with the base and that the tabs are securely engaged.

I hope this helps, and I wish you the best of luck in resolving the issue with your Nest Learning Thermostat 3rd generation!

Best,

Zoe

Hello Zoe, @zoeuvre

Thank you, by trade I work in the automotive sector and I do have an eye for these things. Your suggestions are great, thank you.

  1. The tabs are clean,
  2. i used a bit of contact cleaner and cleans the connections.
  3. I used rubberized tape to make space, it held for a bit but ultimately went off line.
  4. The plate is level, I did check. Also, if I swap out the two thermostats the newer one holds fine.
  5. As a control I went I bought a new identical one and the new one clicks in nice and tight on the old base without issue. I would say the older ones tabs in question have weakened and no longer have the necessary tension to hold in on the plate.  This is disheartening because its a $250.00 item which is now $500.00. Does Google offer warranty for things like this?
