Nest Thermostat allows temperature to drop without engaging alt heat

Google nest thermostat installed with new heat pump “turns on heat” (registers as “heating”), but the temperature drops ten degrees at night while “heat” is on. There are two additional Alt Heat stages which work perfectly when testing and troubleshooting. The heating tech was just out three days ago and replaced the capacitor and reversing valve.

How can we force Nest to engage alternate heat when the temperature falls? I get notifications from nest that something may be wrong, but it’s clearly an issue with the thresholds of the nest software and not the mechanical side.

Hi mzc0789,

Thanks for reaching out. I'm sorry to hear that you're having an issue with the heating of your Nest Thermostat. I'd love to know more about this and I have a few questions:

  • What type of Nest Thermostat do you have?
  • How is your Nest Thermostat wired?
  • Does it still say heating on the thermostat when the temperature drops ten degrees?

You can also click on this link for some troubleshooting steps you could try.

Thanks,

Edward
