Nest Thermostat blowing room temp air in heating mode

I have had a nest thermostat e for about four years, I installed it in my previous apartment and just moved to a new unit in the same complex. The past four years when heating it would only blow room temperature air, but still heat the apartment just well enough to bring it to the target temperature eventually. I presumed it was just a crappy heating unit, but it wasn't concerning enough to ask the maintenance people to fix it, and I'm lazy and would forget to bring it up in passing.

After moving, and switching the old apartment back to the thermostat it came with, the heat started working again, and now my current place is having the same problem, so it's definitely the nest that is causing it. I'm not sure what to do, I saw a suggestion to switch the O/B setting but that made it actually blow cold air instead of room temp. It's not a dual fuel system as far as I can tell. The wires aren't corroded, they're properly inserted, everything is in the correct spot.

Has anyone run into a situation like this before? I hope I haven't just had a faulty nest for four years and not realized it.

Hi  dmgrove,

Uh-oh! Let me take a look at this for you. A few questions:

  1. Are you located in North America or Europe?
  2. Did you use the Compatibility Checker tool to confirm the thermostat's compatibility.
  3. Does the thermostat screen indicate that it’s actively calling for heating?
  4. What type of furnace do you have? (gas, electric, etc.)
  5. When did heating last work?
  6. Did heating ever work with the Nest thermostat?
  7. Did the heating work with the previous thermostat?
  8. Did you turn off the power to the HVAC system?
  9. Did you recently turn off any breakers?
  10. Have you recently experienced a brownout or blackout?
  11. Is there a light switch near the heater that controls an outlet?
  12. Did you select the correct fuel type?
  13. Do the LED lights blink on the HVAC control board? If yes, locate the light.
  14. When was the last time you changed the furnace's air filter?
  15. Have you experienced extremely cold weather lately?
  16. Is this the first notable temperature drop of the year in the area?

Also, kindly send us a photo of how are thermostat wires are connected to your control board, your previous thermostat, and to your Nest Thermostat base.

Keep us posted.

Best,

Zoe
