Nest Thermostat keeps going offline in the app. Comes back online when I stand in front of it.

I have read and tried the solutions of many threads with "offline solutions" and none have worked for me.

I have two thermostats, one of them keeps going offline in the app.  This thermostat goes back online at the moment I step or stand in front of it, when the screen goes on showing the temperature setting.  Everything is good, voltage +3.82, network connectivity (of course, it just went online when I stepped in front of the screen without touching it).  Then, goes back offline few minutes later after leaving from the thermostat.  I have also removed and reinstalled the app from my phone, I have gone online through the web browser in my PC and it is still offline until I stand in front of it.  The only thing I have not done is factory-resetting and reconfiguring.  There are no messages at the screen.

My other thermostat is NOT AFFECTED, it is always online as it should.  There are not new installations, they have been working for several years.  This problem started few days ago.

Any real solution and/or technical explanation?

Which Nest thermostats do you have?

Do you have two separate HVAC systems or just one with a zone controller?

Do you have a Boiler with or without a Valve zone controller?

How is the Nest thermostat's wired?

Hi Patrick,

I have two separate HVAC units, it is a two story home.  The reason I mentioned the second thermostat was to make obvious there is no problem with WiFi, interference, …, etc.  one thermostat works perfectly and the other started going offline few days ago after many years of working fine.

By the way, this evening, I factory reset this problematic thermostat and it still went into offline mode some time after the reset and re-configuration.  It still comes back online again once I stand in front of it.

I am leaning towards replacing the internal battery even though I don’t have a low voltage battery indication or replace it for a new unit.

Both are 4-wires thermostats, regular freon AC and Nat Gas heater.

UPDATE & SOLUTION:  Even though there was no indication or alarm of a low battery, I ordered a new battery and replace it.  Then, I reinstalled the thermostat into its base after a 45 mins charge with the USB port.  The thermostat went back online and it has stayed online since.  Problem solved.
