Nest Thermostat kicks heat on at lower limit and continues to heat well beyond lower and also upper

Hey all,

Now that the area is cooling down a bit I switched the thermostat to heat and cool. Problem is when the hit kicks on at 65 it will run the heat well above the threshold to start cooling. So much so we have to switch to just cooling to get it to kick off. Is anyone else having this issue? Please help!

Hi Manuel,

Got it figured out and wanted to respond in case it’s helpful for others. I have two systems and install them both the same (per the instructions provided). What I came to realize after going through the tests, etc was that I set my convention up as a heat pump. It’s conventional and I recognized the wiring was incorrect based on the photos I took of the old thermostat. The old thermostat wasn’t as clearly labeled but in the end it was a common sense error. Hope my error helps someone else avoid the same mistake!

Hi Cwiedel,

Thanks for reaching out; I understand that your Google Nest thermostat when you have active heat is always on. I know this can be frustrating; no worries, I am here to help! Before, I need to ask some questions to understand better your situation.

  1. What type of Nest thermostat do you have?"
  2. When did the issue start?"
  3. What other strange symptoms have you experienced since the problem started?"
  4. Are there any error messages? If so, what are they exactly?
  5. Is this a new installation?
  6. What kind of HVAC system do you have?" (Heat pump, conventional system, etc.)
  7. Do you notice any intervals or specific patterns between these strange behaviors?
  8. Do you have a common ground wire or C wire?
  9. Have you experienced any power outages within the last few days or weeks?

I will be waiting for your response.

Regards.
