Nest Thermostat (v2) works but when you spin the dial the temperature doesn't change

Hi, I have a v2 Nest learning thermostat.  It has worked great for several years.  Recently when we turn the dial, there is no feedback (i.e., the temp numbers don't change).  If I take the cap off the other Nest and put it on this one, it works great and provides changing numbers when turned.  Does that mean the cap needs a firmware update?  I don't have any other ideas.

With the old cap, can you remotely chante the settings?

yes, we can use the app and it does change the temp.  just the physical dial gives no feedback at all.

Thanks for reaching out — I appreciate you being a step ahead of us. Giving these troubleshooting a swirl might help: 

 

  1. Factory Reset your Nest Learning Thermostat. It will delete your temperature schedule and equipment settings.
    1. Go to the Quick View menu.
    2. Look for Reset.
    3. Choose All Settings.
  2. Reseat all the wires.
    1. Turn your breaker off.
    2. Remove the thermostat display from its base.
    3. Take a photo of the wires you have.
    4. Remove all the wires and let them be disconnected for 60 seconds. 
    5. Reinsert the wires in each designated terminal. Use the photo as your reference on how you'll wire your thermostat.
    6. Make sure all the wires are straight and flatten to avoid pushing the display away from its base.
    7. Attach the display to its base and turn the breaker back on.
    8. Proceed with the setup of your thermostat.
