@jonniharley , no thermostat, when detached from its wall base, will work controlling your HVAC equipment. This is why the more advanced smart thermostats have a mobile app to allow you to control your Thermostat.
What is the scenario in which you feel there is a a need to remove your thermostat from the wall plate?
If you consider that the wires that are attached to the wall plate are the wires that control your HVAC a system you need something to use those wires. The wall plate allows the thermostat to connect to those wires and manage the HVAC system.

The thermostat isn't a portable device, the display must be attached to the base for you to be able to use it.
