Nest gen 3 in zoned system

Hello,

I have 2  Nest thermostats on a dual zone system. The issue I’m having is both zones are allowed to run at the same time. Previously, if zone 1 is actively cooling and zone 2 requests air…zone 2 will wait until zone 1 I finished. But now with the Nest, if zone 1 is actively cooling and zone 2 requests air, zone 2 won’t wait…the damper will open so now BOTH zones are cooling.

It won’t do this in vise versa…if zone 2 is actively cooling and zone 1 requests air, zone 1 will wait until zone 2 is complete.

I hope this makes sense. Any ideas??

Type & age of board is helpful. I’m trying to see the sense lol. So if you want zone 2 to wait unTill zone 1 is finished need to swap wiring at zoning board just like zone 1 would wait unTill zone 2 is done but whole idea of zones is whatever zone demands air it would share if other zones are asking for same air

so if 1 zone is calling for cool & zone 2 calls for cool also then damper should open if zone 1 is calling for cool & delivering air & zone 2 calls for heat then zone 2 should wait till zone1 hit target temp then turn on zone 2 & deliver heat & vice versa hope that makes sense good luck

Hello folks,

I know it has been a while, but I wanted to ensure that everything was covered here.

Thanks for the input, @HVAC.

@R-G, in addition to what was shared above. As each thermostat calls for (activates) heat or cooling, the panel takes the first call from any zone.

For example:

  1. You decide that you want heat in the living room only.
  2. You set your living room thermostat to heat mode.
  3. The damper opens for the calling zone (the area controlled by the specific thermostat; in this case, the living room damper opens).
  4. The dampers close in areas that don’t need heat.
  5. The heater (furnace or heat pump) activates and begins to supply air only to the calling zone.
  6. If thermostats in other zones call for heat while this happens, the dampers in those zones open up so the heat can also get there.

Let us know if you have more questions.

Regards,

Mark
