Nest gen 3 thermostat failing

Bloss2002

This morning the house was cold.

The thermostat said it had a low battery and no network connection which is odd as it’s, the base unit, plugged into the wall and the router is working fine. I rebooted unit and the internet and it reconnected but still showed low battery. I tried a few things to re charge it via a USB different plugs/sockets and eventually it seemed to have enough charge and be working as usual. I returned it to its usual spot and charger all seemed fine.

In the afternoon the house was cold again, thermostat said it was 14 so I spun the outer wheel to 19, orange screen, heating went on, showing 90+ mins to reach heat, then within minutes it was showing it has reached 20, black screen, heating went off.

I restarted the device, 15 mins later it was showing temp at 23, it’s not 23.

I turned on manual heating from the wall box.

 After 15 mins it says it’s 25. It’s not!

The unit is on a north facing shelf out of the sun. In a cool room, It’s been here working just fine for over 12 months. Sunblock is on anyway.

Network connection is 79 and showing as connected.

History shows it was off all day yesterday, i was out and didn’t notice, usually on for several hours as day.

note despite the sting being on 18 now and the heating of the unit continues to show a rising temp…. In the time it’s taken to write this is fine up to 26.

 What’s going on

Hello there,

Got it. Let's try these additional steps:

  1. Check the thermostat’s network connection.
    • Some wireless access points can cause the Nest thermostat’s Wi-Fi chip to overheat, which affects the ambient temperature readouts.
      • Make sure the thermostat is online.
      • Refer to Wi-Fi routers that are incompatible with Nest products and Recommended Wi-Fi router settings for Nest products to check if your router and network settings work with the Nest Thermostat.
      • Disconnect the thermostat from the Wi-Fi network for 24 hours to monitor the ambient temperature, and let us know afterward. To disconnect the thermostat from the network, select Settings > Network > Disconnect.
      • If the ambient temperature readouts return to normal 24 hours from when the customer disconnects the thermostat to the network, it means the Wi-Fi router causes the heat.

Thanks,

Zoe

Hi Bloss2002,

Yikes! Based on the information you provided, it appears that your Nest Thermostat is experiencing several issues. Kindly check on the following:

  1. The low battery and network connection issues you encountered could be related to a power or connectivity problem. Make sure that the base unit is securely plugged into the wall and that the power outlet is functioning correctly. Additionally, check your Wi-Fi network to ensure it is stable and that the thermostat is within range. If the issues persist, try resetting the thermostat and reconnecting it to your network.
  2. If your thermostat is displaying incorrect temperature readings, it may be due to sensor malfunctions or placement issues. Verify that the thermostat is mounted correctly and not exposed to drafts or direct heat sources that could affect its readings. If necessary, recalibrate the temperature sensor using the thermostat's settings menu.
  3. The rapid heating and inconsistent temperature readings could be a result of a misconfiguration or a malfunction in the thermostat's internal components. Double-check the thermostat's settings to ensure that they accurately reflect your desired temperature preferences. If the issue persists, consider performing a factory reset on the thermostat and reconfiguring it from scratch.

Let us know how it goes.

Best,

Zoe

I’ve done all those things. It’s still reading 24c when the house is cold, overnight the heating is off it drops to about 23c (outside temps 10- 12c)

the base seems a bit warm

it’s spring in the same place it has for the last year, not in a draft, not in a hot spot.

The low battery connection issue has resolved itself.

Now the issue is the incorrect temperature.

 Please advise

Hi there,

Thanks for getting back to us. A few questions:

  • What type of Nest Thermostat do you have?
  • When was the thermostat installed?
  • Where did you install your thermostat? In a room and on a wall or stand)?
  • Do you have other active Nest Thermostats? If yes, do they show the same issue?
  • How big is the difference between the readout of the Nest Thermostat and your thermometer or other thermostats?

If you have the Nest Learning Thermostat or Nest Thermostat E, on your thermostat, go to Settings > Technical Info > Network then check for the Signal Strength value. The signal strength has a maximum value of 100. A signal strength of 75 is considered strong, while a value of 36 or lower is considered weak.

Thanks,

Zoe

Gen 3 learning model, little blue bar in the back, silver ring, black/orange screen

installed by registered professionals with the new boiler in 2019

it is mounted on the little white power base/stand sits on a shelf in the dining room and has not moved for over a year (working perfectly well ip to last weekend)

no other nest products

temp difference is around 10+ degrees (Celsius) higher

signal strength value is 79

Hello Bloss2002,

Thanks for getting back to us. Please try the following:

  1. Restart the thermostat.
    • On the thermostat’s display, go to Settings > Reset > Restart. The thermostat takes a few moments to restart and boot back up.
  2. Turn on Sunblock.
    • Direct sunlight can cause the Nest thermostat temperature sensors to heat up, so the thermostat may think that the ambient temperature in the room is higher than it is.
      1. On the thermostat display, go to Settings > Nest Sense > Sunblock.
      2. Select Yes to make sure Sunblock is on.
  3. Check if the thermostat is near a heat source.
    • Nest Thermostats in the U.S. and Canada are typically on a wall. Check if the thermostat is near:
      • Air vents that direct warm air
      • Appliances (that includes large televisions)
      • Electrical outlets
      • Plumbing (hot water pipes in old buildings are frequently not insulated)
      • Warm air in the wall
      • Other potential heat sources
    • If the thermostat is near heat sources, this is why the thermostat shows a higher temperature than normal. Relocate the thermostat if it's possible.
    • If you have two identical thermostats (as they have the same base plate), and only one of the two thermostats experiences the issue, swap their displays to identify if the cause of the issue is the thermostat’s proximity to heat (in its location).

Let us know how it goes.

Regards,

Zoe

Already restarted AND THE FULL RESET AFTER THAT DIDN’T WORK,

sunblock is already on, Ive already told you this.

it’s not near a heat source, I’ve already told you this

I only have one nest product, one thermostat

 I’VE ALREADY TOLD YOU THIS!

If you can’t help me fix it just say so!

What I’m thinking right now is it is a garbage piece of tech that breaks after 2 years!

please be honest and stop wasting both our time.

 Thank you

nest was connected to wifi

Disconnected from wifi for24 hrs

rebooted wifi during this time

temp still showing 10+ degrees Celcius above ambient temp in room e.g at 6 am it is 10 degrees C, the nest shows 25.5 degrees C

I cannot find the email reply but the request was for this image of a thermometer next to the nest to proove the sensor is showing an inaccurate reading.

The room temp on the thermometer shows 18degrees the nest shows 25degrees.

I’m really feeling like your are just passing me around hoping I’ll go away.

 It’s not good customer service.

Also to note it’s the humidity reading is way off.

Its showing 37% right now, it’s usually between 50 and 60% it’s been dropping ever since the temp problems started
