Nest learning thermostat jumper wire not working

Cburns73

Bought a nest thermostat leaning Gen. 3rd worked all winter heating the house. Turn to cooling and fan shuts off while AC is running. Freezes the line. AC guy called out states it the thermostat. We had a jumper wire from RH to RC in old thermostat. Was told didn't need one for nest. So just a red wire in RH. When I set up do you only mark RH? We need RH and RC, but I have nothing going to RC so don't know if I told the thermostat the right wiring? Yes, it does kick on the AC and fan, but the fan shuts off after about 3mins of running. The AC will still be running. Reason for the freeze. The other wire are G, W1 and Y1

Hello Cburns73,

Thanks for reaching out. I'd love to know more about this.

Could you share a photo of your thermostat's wiring? Try a test run on your HVAC system, including the fan, under Equipment Settings > Test. This is to see if they can run independently. Also, please check its power readings in the Technical Info settings.

Let me know how it goes.

Regards,
Mark

Yes, the fan can run on it own. Here's a photo of my wires.

Hi Cburns73,

Thanks for letting me know. To better look at this. It seems that you haven't attached your thermostat's wiring photo. Can you help with a clear copy so I can see how you labeled them?

I'll look forward to your response.

Regards,
Mark

Hi there,

Thanks for the photo. Could you try moving the power wire from Rh to Rc? Please turn off the power from your HVAC system at the breaker first before touching the wire. Also, gather the power readings in the Technical Info settings before and after moving the power wire, then activate your system and keep me posted on how it goes.

Regards,
Mark

Hello there,

I don't want to be a nudge, but I'd like to check if you were able to get your thermostat working. How's it going? Were there any changes?

Best,

Mark

No, nothing is working. I'm charging the thermostat hoping it could be that we need more power. We do not have a common wire.

Hi Cburns73,

I understand that you've been using your thermostat for awhile now. It appears that you're experiencing power-related issues. For the long term, I'd suggest installing a common wire to provide consistent power to your thermostat. By any chance, your system might have had a spare wire that we can use for C-wire. Try checking your system's control board and letting us know if it's available.

Best,
Mark

Two electrians and this blog. There is a common wire but it wasn't hooked up. So I hooked it up and everything is running. Why didn't the paid electrians do this? Thank you very much for you help. I'm calling the company this week to ask for my money back since this should have been caught by them.

Yes, when moved to RC it turns everything on. Blower turns off after about 5mins. AC stays on. Within one min. Blower turns on for a min or two then turns off. This goes on for 30mins the Blower turns off and stays off. Leaving the AC on to freeze the line.

I had to replace the thermostat to a cheap one and send back the Nest. It's been replaced with a new learning nest thermostat yesterday. Worked fine for an hour turning both blower in the furnace and AC unit on and off together. After an hour the blower would shut off after a few minutes of being on. The AC would still be running. Allowing only the AC to run freezes the line. Since in the 90 degree weather. I just put the cheap thermostat on till we can get this figured out. Really don't want to pay for third electrician to come out and tell me it's the thermostat again.
