Nest learning thermostat

I have a new thermostat, same as the old one but new; just placing it where the old was; one of the wires goes to a “*” attachment on the lower right side of the bracket. Installation instructions don’t show a wire going to this connection. What’s wrong?

To make sure of your thermostat's configuration, can you post a picture of its wiring set up? Also, what type of HVAC system do you have? (Heat Pump, Conventional, etc.)
