My thermostat only has a W and R wire can I just use those and not connect the CR and W wires?

Hi @Don1947,

Thanks for reaching out to the community! That's a great question about Nest thermostats and wiring. I'm happy to assist you. To help me with that, I have a few questions:

  • What type of Nest thermostat do you have?
  • Have you already set up your Nest thermostat?
  • Would you be able to send a picture of your thermostat's wiring?

Nest thermostats are designed to use very little power, and in many cases they can use your system’s heating and cooling wires to get enough consistent power. But sometimes, you may need to connect a common wire (C wire) or power accessory, like the Nest Power Connector, to make your system compatible. For your reference, you can also check the Nest compatibility checker

Please let me know if you have any questions from here, as I would be happy to take a closer look and assist you further.

Cheers,

Jonathan
