Nest randomly turning off

Armtoe
Community Member

The last couple of months, our nest has started randomly turning itself completely off.  I have completely turned off the auto-schedule and the home/away assist functions.  When I look at the history, I can see an icon that says the thermostat was switched off by my account.  In consequence of that, I have changed my account password, just in case it was being maliciously done by someone with access to my account.  Despite the foregoing, it is still randomly turning off.  It seems to be happening at around midnight.  I have also reset the thermostat.

The thermostat does not show as having a power issue.

Since I am in a cold part of the country in winter, this is a serious problem as I do not want my pipes to freeze should this turnoff when I am not around.

Anybody have any thoughts or suggestions?

Hi Armtoe,

Yikes! I'm sorry to hear that you're experiencing issues with your Nest Thermostat randomly turning off. Here are a few suggestions to help troubleshoot and address the problem:

  1. Make sure that your Nest Thermostat is receiving a consistent power supply. Ensure that the wiring is secure and that there are no loose connections. If your thermostat is using a C-wire for power, verify that it is properly connected.
  2. Ensure that your Nest Thermostat has the latest firmware installed. Updates often include bug fixes and improvements that can address issues like unexpected shutdowns. You can check for updates through the Nest app or the Nest website.
  3. Confirm that the temperature settings on your Nest Thermostat are appropriate and not set too low. If the temperature setting is too low, the thermostat may shut off to conserve energy. Adjust the settings to ensure they are suitable for your comfort needs.
  4. Make sure there are no conflicting schedules or settings that could be causing the thermostat to turn off unexpectedly. Double-check the settings in the Nest app and ensure that there are no conflicting temperature preferences or schedules that could be causing the issue.

It's important to address this issue promptly, especially considering the potential risk of frozen pipes. I hope these suggestions help you resolve the problem with your Nest thermostat turning off unexpectedly.

Let us know if that helps.

Best,

Zoe
