Nest runtime alert?

My AC heat pump ended up running overnight for a solid 7 hours; when I discovered that, of course I turned it off.

The evaporator coil  had frozen over, which incidentally had never happened before.

The outside temp overnight wasn't much warmer than the inside, but there had been a storm in the evening (humidity)

I am (now) aware of what needs to be done to fix it -- air flow issues, filter issues, clean the coil, check refrigerant , to etc, but...

For the purposes of this forum, if the thermostat is so smart how comes it couldn't tell it was something wrong, and maybe even do something about it? (Like shut it down for awhile. Continuing to run with it frozen will eventually damage the system )

Can Google Home at least send some sort of alert;

unit "on" for > X hours = trouble!

by the way, i see there's a message

"Your A/C system likely failed to cool your home"

which seems like it should apply, but i never got that -- I have a "non learning" nest; is that message only for learning?
