A few questions — what type of Nest Thermostat are you trying to connect the sensor to? At what part of the connection process does it fail? Also, how many feet is it away from your Nest thermostat? It will be great as well if you could provide a rundown of the steps that you've tried aside from replacing the batteries so we can pick up from there.
