I've had a Nest Thermostat 3rd Generation thermostat for 18 months now. Not had any experience with Hive to make a comparison. However I love the Nest. I had a similar issue regarding "Boost". Coming from and old fashioned timer on the wall I just used to push "boost" to get one hour or "manual" to overide the timer till the next time slot. I had to get that idea out of the head. I do all the "schedules" on my phone ( Android) and as I'm retired and home a lot I have my daily schedules all the same. On the phone app from the home screen select your thermostat. ( I have 2 icons, One for the stat, called "Downstairs" and one for the Hot Water) So choose the stat, select "Schedule". You should see all your selected time and temperature settings. Between all my various settings for the day I have added hourly selections for whatever my chosen "setback temperature" is. 16* in my case. As I said, my daily settings are all the same so I just choose "copy" for that day and then "paste" into each of the other days. Sounds complicated in the telling but in reality very simple. Now if you want to boost you just wind the stat up to whatever and it will boost until the next instruction is reached. You can do this from the stat or the app on the phone. Same difference. I have most of the "helpful" options turned off. I decide if I am warm or cold. I find the thing works very well. Hope this helps.
